Biography

Hailed for her “resonant mezzo-soprano” and “bright and full” voice, California native Karin Mushegain is making her mark as one of the most versatile singers of her generation.  This September, Ms. Mushegain made her Los Angeles Opera debut as the Novice in Suor Angelica, under the baton of Maestro James Conlon and direction of Oscar winner, William Friedkin. Since making her company debut with Pittsburgh Opera as Dryade in Ariadne auf Naxos, Ms. Mushegain has continued her strong relationship with the company  performing the roles of Amastre in Handel’s Xerxes, Sicle in Cavalli’s Ormindo, Second Lady in Die Zauberflote, and Stephano in Romeo et Juliette.  This past season she returned to Pittsburgh Opera for her role debut in the company premiere of Jonathan Dove's Flight.  She also recently debuted as Maddalena in Verdi's masterpiece Rigoletto with Opera Western Reserve.  Ms. Mushegain spent the summer with Lake George Opera performing Kate in Gilbert and Sullivans' The Pirates of Penzance and La Ciesca in Puccini's Gianni Schicchi and Ching's Buoso's Ghost. She will be performing, throughout the season, with Florida Grand Opera as Flora in La Traviata and Tisbe in Rossini's La Cenerentola.
   
A superb interpreter of American Opera, Ms. Mushegain recently performed pieces from Ricky Ian Gordon's My Life With Albertine, at the Hawaii Performing Arts Festival, accompanied by the composer.  She will be joining Mr. Gordon again in 2009 in Bright Eyed Joy, a concert performance of some of his greatest works. She also originated the role of Lead Gypsy in the world premiere of Ian Krouse's Lorca, Child of the Moon.  No stranger to the world of musical theater, Ms. Mushegain was recently seen as Maria in Ash Lawn Opera Festival's production of West Side Story for which she received great critical and audience acclaim.  She has also performed April in Sondheim's Company, Liebeslieder in A Little Night Music, and Lead Woman 1 in Jason Robert Brown's Songs for a New World.

Very much in demand as a concert artist, Ms. Mushegain made her Pittsburgh Symphony debut in Mozart's "Coronation" Mass.  After this successful debut, she was invited back to star with Kevin Glavin in the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra's 2006 and 2007 Holiday Pops Concert, as well as their 2006 "Anthems of Praise" Concert. She will join the Symphony again in 2009 as Julia in their concert version of Jerome Kern's Showboat.   Other notable appearances include an Evening with Samuel Ramey and Friends presented by EPCASO and the Pittsburgh Opera, and Handel's L'allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato with the Hawaii Performing Arts Festival.

Not to be outdone, Ms. Mushegain is a powerful presence in the voice over industry as well.  Her lustrous and compelling singing can be heard as "The Voice" in Ubisoft Entertainment's wildly succesful Heroes of Might and Magic video game series.  She is currently in the studio working with highly acclaimed composer Paul Romero for another greatly anticipated game for Sony Entertainment.

Ms. Mushegain is a graduate of the estemeed Pittsburgh Opera Resident Artist Program, as well as the Aspen Music Festival and American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria.  After receiving her Bachelor of Music from Northwestern University, she went on to pursue her Master's at UCLA.  She is a current student of UCLA Vocal Department Chair, Juliana Gondek.
